System Requirements:

Please make sure that the Macintosh on which you will use MAX meets these minimum requirements:

Macintosh 68020 or higher running System 7 or higher
3.7 MB RAM partition for application
6.5 MB hard disk space for standard installation (1.5 MB for minimum)

If you plan on using QuickTime movies or internal Macintosh sound playback, you will also need to install the QuickTime and Sound Manager 3.0 extensions (included with Macintosh System software).

Installation Instructions

To be safe we recommend restarting your Macintosh with the extensions disabled before installing. To do this hold down the shift key while your computer restarts. You will see a message that says Extensions disabled.

Double click the installer icon and follow its instructions. For the most part, the standard installation should work for everyone. If you plan to develop your own objects in C, you will need to install the software developers kit separately by choosing the custom installation.

There are several packages you can install if you do not want all the files installed. Choose custom from the main installation screen. When you click on a package, you will get a brief description of what is in it. Shift click multiple packages if you wish if to install more than one.

If you plan to use MIDI with MAX, you should install OMS if you have not already. Follow the instructions on the OMS disk if you need help installing.

After you have installed, you will want to restart your Macintosh, so all necessary extensions load before running MAX (i.e. QuickTime, Sound Manager, OMS, etc.)

The first time you launch MAX, you will be asked insert the master disk to authorize the copy. Insert your master disk to authorize MAX for that particular hard drive. The Getting Started manual describes this in more detail.

NOTE: Before launching MAX, please take a quick look at the READ ME file that is installed with MAX. It contains late breaking information on MAX and documentation.
